Wilmington Railroad Museum

Wilmington Railroad Museum

If you’re not sure what to do as an activity that can be fun for the whole family, you may want to consider a visit to the Wilmington Railroad Museum. It has a stellar collection of displays that should serve two purposes. First, everything is meant to be education, as is the case with most museums. However, there’s also a layer of enjoyment baked into the operational style, which helps the experience feel less monotonous.

While reading and exploration activities are available for those who delight in that, there’s also a play area that allows visitors to build custom train tracks. What are the tracks without the trains? There are over 20 scale model trains that feature tremendous and accurate details.

Additionally, there’s a life-sized caboose, a boxcar, and a steam locomotive that is over 100 years old. It’s not hard to see where the fun comes into the equation, and you get to do all of this as you trace Wilmington railroad developments. There’s also a wealth of information on George Pullman, Thomas Edison, and other legends and historical figures in the railroad industry.

A Little History and Membership

The museum has done an excellent job of giving visitors fun and educational experiences since 1979. There are membership packages for the family that cost as little as $80, and they allow you to visit the museum at your leisure with your family for the whole year. For comparison, other museums also offer family plans that achieve a similar objective. However, the difference is that they tend to have slightly higher price tags in the order of about $100.

When you become a member, you gain unfiltered access to all the regular programs that take place, the museum’s annual meeting, gift shop discounts, and access to Storytime. Additionally, you get early ticket sale notifications for the trendy Polar Express event and access to member-specific events.

Remember that it’s a non-profit organization, but it still needs to operate somehow. Much of this is through members’ generosity, so feel free to become a part of things.

Visitor Info

If you’re interested in paying a visit to the museum, here’s a little information that should be very useful in that pursuit. First, opening hours are set in blocks, so you should look at the museum’s website to see what the block looks like for the date you are interested in.

If you’re confused by the use of the word “blocks,” it refers to a date range. There are two blocks, which are September 8 to June 1 and June 1 to September 8. The former block has no Sunday opening hours and runs from 10 AM to 4 PM every other day. On the other hand, the latter opens 10 AM to 5 PM on Monday-Saturday and from 1 PM to 5 PM on Sundays.

Standard holiday closure policy applies, so don’t expect to access the facility on days such as Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day. The Easter holidays are also a part of this group.

Do you love nature and looking for a nice place to relax and take in the beautiful scenery? Go enjoy The Airlie Gardens.
