Bellamy Mansion Museum

Bellamy Mansion Museum

Between 1859 and 1861, Dr. John D. Bellamy had this place designed and constructed on his behalf. He was a very wealthy man, so it stands to reason that he could afford a big, 22-room, 10,000 square foot home, such as this one. The actual work was completed by a combination of free artisans and skilled slaves.

It’s not possible to pin down a single architectural style that the mansion uses. Instead, it combines Italianate, Neoclassical, and Greek Revival styles. James F. Post, the architect responsible for the layout, worked along with his assistant, Rufus Bunnell, to ensure that they had a winning design.

The mansion stands as such a masterpiece because they took the initiative to consider every possible nuance in their design process. For example, the kitchen lies on the mansion’s east side. This was not done by chance, as the intention was to ensure that it received the first light when the daytime period rolled around. There was even a belvedere in the design that served the purpose of air conditioning in an earlier form.

Visitors are free to see the marvel that the museum is, as exploration is not limited to certain areas. You can enjoy a self-guided tour in which you explore the entire mansion. As it was an early design, specific considerations that are almost mandatory in today’s world for such a building were not yet considered.

Therefore, the place is not the most handicap-friendly place, especially when you consider that the only way to explore the various floors is to use the multiple flights of stairs available.

Thankfully, those who can’t move around are not entirely left in the dark since there’s a 30-minute, guided video version of the tour. Of course, it’s not the same as the hands-on experience, but it is better than not having the experience at all.

The museum’s mission is to better understand architectural history, historic preservation, and restoration methods in the state. Of course, this means that there’s an intense focus on preserving and interpreting the architectural history of the Bellamy Mansion.

Museum Gift Shop

Those who enjoy having souvenirs to commemorate their adventures to places, such as this one, can consider taking a trip to the gift shop to pick something up. There are informational books, cookbooks, clothing items and headwear, ornaments, trinkets, and kitchen items.

Visitor Information

If you’re planning on stopping by the attraction, there are a couple of things to think about. The museum’s office hours are between 9:30 AM and 5 PM on Mondays to Fridays. However, tour times run from 10 AM to 4 PM on Mondays to Saturdays, and 1 PM to 4 PM on Sundays. The choice of a guided audio tour or a self-guided tour is yours. However, no tour can begin beyond the 4 PM mark. No pets are allowed, except leashed service animals.

While the mansion isn’t handicap-friendly, the visitor center is another story. This is the area where you visit the gift shop and the admissions desk. There’s a brick ramp to help with movement in the area.

The museum facilitates group tours and school field trips, and the information is all on the site.

Are you a fan of art or an artist yourself. You are guaranteed to enjoy The Cameron Art Museum.
